Children and youth should not use main restrooms alone

We have filed a police report about one incident of inappropriate behavior and are working with a detective. The man who has used what we believe to be a false claim to enter the womens restroom several times in the past few weeks may have been seen last Sunday in the parking lot. He is typically showing up after second service, 1 pm and later, but we need to be cautious at all times. If you want to know about other restrooms in the building, pick up a map at the Sunday School Table.

When last seen the man has a long grey beard and long great hair. His appearance was unkempt. If you see someone matching that description, please find me or one of the ministers or Brian Hagemann, our administrator. We must officially inform him that his behavior means that he cannot return to the building or grounds. If he does, he will be trespassing and we will call 911. You may also gather a group to inform him but please don't do so alone.

Flower Ceremony and Easter Egg Hunt This Sunday, April 24

This Sunday we all join together in the Worship Center to celebrate a Unitarian Universalist ceremony that dates back to the 1920s and first took place in Prague. Please bring a flower for each family member. At the close of the service the children and youth help to lead us in a ritual that represents the gifts that we each bring to First UU and the gifts that we each receive from one another.
The Easter Egg Hunt which will take place in Fellowship Hall during the middle of the worship service features real eggs and milk chocolate eggs. If your child cannot have either, let us know by clicking on the comment link below. The preschool through 5th grade will leave the service after the story for the Easter Egg hunt. They will also prepare for their duties during the flower ceremony and learn the story of the first Flower Ceremony.

Children: Wear your oldest clothes on May 1st

Our 2nd annual Holi celebration is Sunday, May 1 at 9:15 and 11.
If you are preschool through 5th grade you may get your clothing, your face and your hair painted during the celebration of Spring, called the Festival of Colors or Holi. We have 5 activities that children may move among. Some are suitable for older children; others will be favorites of the preschoolers. They are:

Spraying colored water. Children may bring SMALL water pistols, no soakers or other large water sprayers. Bring old towels if you child is likely to choose this activity.
Smearing each other with safe fingerpaints.
Face painting
Storytelling of Holi, Hindu and Sikh stories
Dancing with flower petals

Don't miss Talking with Children About Race May 1, 2 pm. You'll want to invite your friends to this one.

and she has developed some answers and some guidelines for parents and teachers. She'll tell us how to use children's books to generate talk about race and provide us with book lists. There will also be an opportunity to develop ideas in small groups and share them with the larger group.

Connect with Nature as a Family on May 8th and 15th

Justice Sundays for PreK/K May 8 and 15, 10:30 am
We end the year with two nature experiences and we combine the two sessions. At 10:30 on May 8th the Scioto Audubon MetroPark educators has an experience of birds and bird habitat for families with preschool and kindergarten children. The following week everyone travels to Battelle Darby Creek Natural Play Area to explore the woods and creek.

Meet at the church at 10 am for carpooling on May 8 or at 9:45 on May 15 or meet at the locations. For carpooling sign up at the Sunday School Table or use the comments link below.

For the Audubon Center located 1 mile south of downtown Columbus:
From High Street (going south) turn right on Whittier (which runs along south end of German Village and Brewery District).

From Front Street (going north) turn left onto Whittier Follow Whittier, making no turns, across the bridge spanning the tracks, past the Police Impound Lot and the other side streets until you drive into the parking lot in front of the center.

Last Sunday there was an unpleasant incident in the main women's restroom. It was not aimed at children. We do, however, want to ensure that our children and youth are safe.

Please do not allow unaccompanied children into either restroom this Sunday. And caution teens, particularly girls, to go to the restroom in pairs. You may want to take younger children to the restrooms in the RE wing this Sunday.

Please report any inappropriate behavior to me or administrator Brian Hagemann, or ministers Eric Meter and Mark Belletini. We have taken the first steps to work this through and I'll keep you posted. In the meantime, we can take extra care to live our values and practice community.

Parents of Grades 7 thru 12: It's Spring Con! Don't Miss the Deadline

The Spring Con is at First Church of Cleveland, April 29th-May 1st. Ages 12 through 19 are welcome. However, 7th & 8th graders must have previously attended a YAC Conference or SI!

The deadline for youth to notify Helene Roussi of their need for sponsor and transportation is APRIL 19 at midnight because she will be out of town for a week in April. Please note this deadline! You must email me at hroussimt@yahoo.com, and please put in the subject line that you are requesting transportation/sponsorship.

Adults, please also let her know if you can help. If you have youth that have previously attended Cons and you have not yet made a contribution of your time by driving or sponsoring, please consider stepping up and doing so. This whole system works only because people volunteer and make it work.

On those two Sundays in May we would like to join with a Catholic Parish that we met at the Feast Day of the Virgin of Guadelupe. We will need adults, as well as youth, to plan the events. Particularly consider this if you speak Spanish, but don't rule it out if it interests you.

Lead the PreK/K groups in Justice Sundays on May 8 and 15. The suggestion is that they visit the bison at Battelle Darby Creek and go creeking there the next week. Another option is the Audubon Center.

The parents go with the children so not a lot of organizing is needing. Just set a point and time for everyone to meet and do a little talking with the center personnel in advance.

Be the Easter Bunny

At Easter we return to an older form of All Ages Worship, which I secretly call The Sandwich. The children begin in worship as usual with a bit longer time together. Then they leave for about 30 minutes, returning during the offering. At that time we celebrate the Flower Ceremony with the children serving as the bearers of the flowers.

During that 30 minutes we will have an Easter Egg Hunt in Fellowship Hall. We need Easter Bunnies to hide the eggs during the early part of worship, as well as decorate a bit, and others to supervise the hunt. We also need those who are willing to dye eggs. We will have a mix of real eggs and candy.

Kids are already asking for it. Holi, sometimes called the Holiday of Colors, is an Indian spring holiday celebrated by all the major religions in India. We celebrate it more than a month late to correspond more closely to the reality of spring here. Last year we had body smearing with fingerpaints, face painting, dancing to Indian music with scarves ankle deep in flower petals and storytelling. Had the weather been better we would have had squirt guns with children's water paint. We need people to help with all of these activities. Broaden your teen's experience and leadership skills

CIFY is looking for Interfaith bridge-building UU Youth ages 13-19! We know you are out there! ColumbusInterFaith Youth are busy with preparations for work projects around town focusing on their chosen theme for 2011--Hunger. We have Muslim, Jewish, UU, Christian, Hindu and Questioning youth coming together on the2nd and 4th Sunday afternoons throughout the year between 2 and 4pm. This group was born at First UU. This is a great way to broaden your teen's experience and leadership skills. Contact Sami or Lauri Nandyal or Allegra or Susan Roscignio. Or call the RE Office at 267-4946, ext 28.

Campfire Leader, Mary McMichael-Liston. reports that the club is growing. We currently have 8 boys and girls actively involved in the club. They range in ages from first to fifth graders. We have been learning about working together, leadership, and all the "business activities" of creating/running a club. The kids have created a covenant for how everyone is to be treated, laid out consequences for those who break the covenant, named the club, created a job list for each meeting, and are creating a club banner. They are very enthusiastic and excited to be in charge! This week we are starting a Candy Bar sale to raise money to support Campfire USA activities and our club. The kids will be selling Anthony Thomas Candy bars for $1 each. There are 4 flavors - Chocolate and Peanut butter, Crispy Chocolate, Chocolate and Caramel, and Chocolate Almond. At that price, Who Can Resist???? Gabe and Madie McMichael-Liston and Nicholas Casto will be happy to supply candy to any church member in need of a quick chocolate fix!

Dr. Jeane Copenhaver to work with teachers in "Race To Justice" class

Dr. Jeane Copenhaver, nationally recognized expert and OSU professor in the School of Teaching and Learning, will be in the Race To Justice classroom often during the next six weeks. She is gathering information to assist her in formulating her next research proposal which she expects will include the role that religious institutions play in the development of ideas about race. She will not gather individual information. She is looking for overall impressions.

The Race To Justice teachers and I are excited about this opportunity. Jeane will be able to provide feedback to the teachers as they move through the preparation of a video about racial attitudes.
In addition, she has volunteered to work with me on a class for parents about talking with your children about race. She is best known for the extensive mentions of her work in NurtureShock in the chapter titled "Why White Parents Don't Talk About Race."

This is her research biography:
Dr. Copenhaver-Johnson conducts classroom-based studies of young children's responses to literature, the relationships between culture and response, and methods of combating homophobia in teacher education programs. Her research findings have been published in several national journals, and her work has been funded by The National Council of Teachers of English Research Foundation, The Ohio State University Seed Grant Program, and the U.S. Department of Education. Her ongoing work includes an examination of the social/historical understandings made evident during young children's responses to read-alouds of race-themed picturebooks and the role(s) of inquiry in response to literature. She has been the co-director of The Mid-Ohio Writing Project and is an active member of the National Council of Teachers of English and the International Reading Association. She enjoys working with graduate students interested in social, critical, and experiential theories of reader response, read-aloud research, and multicultural teacher education.

The PreSchoolers, Wild Experiences, continue exploring water creatures.

Along with the adults in worship, the elementary groups ask questions about differences and diversity. They'll use science to discover how important diversity is in the universe. They'll learn about diversity in human society. And, they'll look at diversity through art activities.

The Race To Justice group will present the Ingathering story on the 13th and will begin work on a video.

Diversity & Difference Workshop Leaders Needed

We are looking for several workshop leaders for the elementary groups at both 11 and 9:15 for March. We have specifically asked biologists and ecologists to work with kids on the importance of diversity from a science standpoint. We've also asked a few people who work with human diversity and anti-racism to be workshop leaders. You don't have to be specialists to lead great workshops, however. Peace Camp

Save a week in summer for Peace Camp!!

Registration begins in March.

There will be two sessions available. They are both the same and open to anyone who was in elementary school this year (K-6). The first session will be August 1-6. Second session will be August 8-12.

Wild Experiences

The preschoolers are looking at the Big Bang and evolution during the next few sessions. Good timing. Darwin's birthday is Feb. 12th. On the 20th they will be working with the cycles of nature and will have the opportunity to talk about death. Unless the children bring it up or ask questions there will be no discussion. The book is "A Log's Life." This age group usually doesn't understand that death is permanent. They often have some form of heaven in their belief system. No one will explain that that is not true. They will just talk about death of plants and animals as a natural part of life.

Elementary Workshop Groups

In Elementary Workshop Groups they focus on the theme "Listening" as the adults do in worship. At the end of the month several of the groups will have visits from Compassionate Communications leaders. During the month they will be doing listening exercises; have the opportunity to listen to each other's hearts and tummies; produce a movie about listening and interview people about problems that could have been solved if they had listened more.

Race to Justice

Race to Justice for 6th and 7th graders is preparing to visit the National Underground Freedom Museum in Cincinnati. (If you haven't gotten a permission slip to sign, make sure you stop by the classroom.) They are also starting a unit on being an ally which will end with a skit in the worship and the creation of the video.

New High School Class

The new high school class is just getting started. It is a great follow up to Coming of Age. Called "A Place of Wholeness," they begin by looking at what a faith journey means and learning about the faith journey of one of our spiritual ancestors. An activity helps them look at their own faith journeys. Then they look at the way that our tradition has deep history roots and the way that we have had the wings of innovation and change.

Bullying Curriculum Committee

Bullying has been much in the news lately. The fact is bullying has been a problem for First UU children for a long time. For some it is a problem with being bullied. For others it is a problem of watching bullying and not knowing what to do about it.

Given that bullying is so often directed against our children, we need to give them tools to address it. Given that our children who have been raised to be sensitive to unfairness, to racism, to homophobia, we need to be arming them with information that helps them to be effective allies. This can be the beginning of anti-oppression work with children.

I would like to develop units on bullying that we use every year with every level. We know a lot about bullying. We can take effective training and put it in the envelop of Unitarian Universalism and help our children and youth have the satisfaction and faith development experience of making justice in the world. We have two volunteers for the curriculum working group already. If you would like to join the working group, give me a call at ext. 28 or email dre@firstuucolumbus.org.

But there is exciting news about Pedro, whom we supported with phone calls to Sec'y of Homeland Security Nepolitano, per UUA Immigration. Status Update on DREAMer, Pedro, from America's Voice: Pedro was granted 30 days for DHS and ICE to review his case. He's obviously still in danger but at least has a temporary reprieve. Thanks to any and all who called on his behalf.

Games for Children at First Friday

When I wrote the email about First Friday I indicated that there were no activities for children. As it turns out, without fanfare the Social Committee has added board and card games. Two adults remain in the room playing games. James Brown, chair of the Social Committee emphasizes that they do not supervise the children. They can come and go, so there are some age limitations and you will have to check up on your children, but it's a good beginning.

New High School Sunday School Group begins Jan. 23rd

1st through 5th grades - Meet in Room 9
You have Justice Sundays for two Sundays. Then starting on Jan. 23rd you go back to workshops.
Justice Sundays will focus on immigration. You will have the opportunity to write the President what you think should be done about immigration. We are working on getting the youth together with the elementary for a few minutes so that can each see what the other is doing.

Grades 6 & 7 and 9 through 12 - Meet in Room 7
You are preparing for your flash mob featuring the cha cha slide (I think that's the right version) and audio from Martin Luther King. Please bring the costume you plan to wear on the 16th. The costume should either reflect suggest another country or include a t-shirt with the name of another country on it. You will be using the words of Dr. King and the suggestions from what you are wearing to convey the idea that people should welcome people from around the world. You will work on the message for the flyer.

On the 16th you will do the flash mob. We don't yet have the site secured. We will be videoing it and posting it to you tube. We will also be doing interviews to post to an immigration site for youth.

Parents, I'll be sending a form for you to agree to posting video that includes your youth. You will have the option to disapprove posting, to approve posting as an unidentified participant in the flash mob, and to approve use of first name in an interview. You will receive the forms on Sunday, the 9th. Please return them on the 16th. Plans for the 16th are still in process

One the 23rd, all regular groups resume.

is an East Coast regional gathering of UU People of Color (POC)*, including 13 year olds and their parents at Penn
Center, St. Helena Island, SC, Friday, February 25 to Sunday, February 27, 2011.

*Persons who identify as persons of color on an everyday basis and are African, African Caribbean, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, Hispanic/Latino/Latina, Middle Eastern/Arab and/or of African descent.

POC, including youth 13 and over and their parents, and partners of POC are warmly invited to register at

Mandatory OWL Orientation Jan. 9th for 1st Grade & 5th/6th Grade

All parents who want to register their children for either 1st grade or 5th/6th grade Our Whole Lives sexuality education must attend orientation with their children on Jan. 9th at 9 for 5th/6th or 9:15 for 1st grade.

The 1st grade OWL is for those 1st graders who have not yet taken OWL and 5th and 6th graders, likewise, should only take the class once. OWL is the values-based, comprehensive sexuality education that is grounded in the relational and was developed by both the UUA and the United Church of Christ. Call the RE Office (ext 28) if you need more information.

Flash Mob planning in room 7

Our Whole Lives (OWL) Sexuality Education for 1st Grade and 5th and 6th Grade

Orientation is set for both OWL groups on Jan. 9th. 1st grade will meet at 9:15am and 5th and 6th grade at 9 am. This is a 9 or 10 session class held during the first worship service in January, February and March that explores sexuality and the wonder of our bodies in age-appropriate terms and within the context of relationships and Unitarian Universalist values. Amazing things happen in OWL classes. There is trust; there is acceptance; embarrassing questions get answered; families are affirmed and communication grows. We make differences in the lives of children and youth every Sunday in OWL. If you signed up your child during electronic registration, you should hear from your teaching team. If you didn't sign up then, please sign up at the Sunday School Table.

Both classes are open to youth attending either Sunday School session.

Key Immigration Rights Leader Visits with Our Youth This Sunday

On Dec. 12th we kick off Justice Sundays this year for the youth with a visit from Ruben Herrera, Ohio Director of the Reform Immigration for America campaign and faculty member for the Center for Progressive Leadership. He will connect our youth with DREAMers. DREAMers are those in their late teens and 20's who were brought to the U.S. as children who have either lost their documented status or never had it, who have no way to gain that status. They face deportation to countries they have little or no memory of and often no close ties. Because so much of the immigration enforcement system is left to individual decisions, many times the young adults' whole families have documented status.

The group will plan for the next two Justice Sundays on Jan. 9th and 16th and decide on an action to address immigration issues. This Sunday we will also cross High Street to welcome those who have marched, singing and praying, from Worthington for a special mass at our Lady of Peace to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe. Our Lady of Guadalupe is an important symbol at many immigrants rights actions. The marchers are expected to arrive about 1pm. So expect youth to be engaged until about 1:15 pm. Better yet, join them in being neighborly. Plans for this part of Justice Sunday are still fluid. We are waiting for more information from the two parishes. Justice Sundays happen during regular Sunday School times. Our emphasis this year is on immigration justice and emphases hands-on ways to work for change, as well as connection and acting as allies.

12th - All groups 5th grade and under have regular class. Those 6th, 7th and 9th grade will have Justice Sunday. High School OWL will have its last class followed by a lunch. The new group for High School, using curricula they chose begins Jan. 23rd
19 - NO REGULAR GROUPS MEET - It is a holiday worship service for everyone - The Festival of the Illumination. The Toddler Room and the Nursery are open.
24 - 4:30 gathering, 5 pm Family Christmas Eve Service - No Toddler Room or Nursery. Bring a goodie to share at 4:30 and volunteer to become a part of an enactment of the Italian Christmas folktale La Befana, as we search together for the newborn King.
26 - All children and youth gather to drum.

Justice Sundays are a part of Sunday School

This year we continue with the immigration theme for grades 1 through 12. For Elementary, Middle School and High School we have five days for Justice Sundays. The younger kids have three days and they focus on the importance of support good animal habitat. Marjorie Prince is in charge of the Elementary Justice Sundays and Martha McFerran is in charge of the Middle and High School.

On Dec. 12th, grades 6, 7 and 9 will meet together for Justice Sunday.
They will learn a bit about Our Lady of Guadalupe and then participate in the celebration of her Saints Day across the street at Our Lady of Peace. Our Lady of Guadalupe is a very important cultural and religious symbol in Mexico and her Saints Day is celebrated in many countries. There will also be information about a Cincinnati teen who was brought here as a young child who just graduated fifth in his class who is being deported to a country he has no memory of and what can be done to help. The 8th grade OWL group will receive printed information that gives them a bit of background so that they can flow into the huge group gathering at Our Lady of Peace who have marched from Worthington, singing and praying, to honor the Lady of Guadalupe. That participation will close the Justice Sunday. So be prepared for your youth to stay until 1 or so.

The 2nd and 3rd Sundays of January will be devoted to immigration-related projects. The elementary and the Middle and High Schools will have separate projects and they will be projects that have an effect on the real world. We will do justice in addition to "learning about."

I am particularly concerned that we got little participation from the middle and high school last year. Yet, when I talked with a group of kids about what we were doing, they were excited. They said they just didn't know it was happening. Please encourage your teens to attend, although there is a scheduling conflict with the high school OWL for this first Justice Sunday. High School OWL can be full participants in January.

4th & 5th grade created PSAs

The 4th & 5th graders created PSAs in a month long project. There are two about BP which show influences from another workshop on What Would You Do If You Worked for BP During the Disaster? It was a way of exploring ethics in action. The third is a clear appeal against buying pets that come from puppy mills.

UUs Invented the American Christmas

Well, not entirely, but we sure did our part. In New England, where both Unitarians and Universalists got their start, there was no celebration of Christmas and, in fact, some laws against it in some places. In Southern colonies Christmas celebrations were not family affairs and included lots of drinking and racing and cock fighting and other traditional rituals. Gradually during the 1800's Christmas became popular as a family and religious celebration. And the UU's were right there on the cutting edge of change.

A central focus in the home became the Christmas Tree. A pagan symbol of fertility and regeneration, the practice of bringing an evergreen branch or a small tree into the house and placing it on a table became popular in German speaking areas of Europe about 1600. In about 1820 a few Pennsylvania Dutch families put up Christmas trees but it wasn't until 1832 when the Rev. Charles Follen a Unitarian and professor of German at Harvard College, put up a tree in his home in Cambridge and decorated it and then, of course wrote about it that the idea began to spread.

Unitarians and Universalists are responsible for several carols and one of the most enduring popular Christmas songs: "Jingle Bells," "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear," and "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" and "Over the River and Through the Woods."

English Unitarian Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol profoundly changed the celebration of Christmas, as did the American Unitarian, Louisa Mae Alcott's popular works. Her descriptions of the March family's Christmases and her many stories that were in popular magazines perhaps did more to spark the change than did Dickens, though Dickens is more read now.

Holiday Childcare for You! Saturday, Dec. 11

Need a time out to relax in the midst of the Holiday rush? Maybe you would like to finish your Christmas shopping without the kids along "to help"? Perhaps we can help! The Youth Group is offering child care at the church Saturday, December 11th from 1:30 until 4:30. The service is for children between the ages of 3 and 10, (potty trained children only please). The youth will be caring for the children with adult supervision. Donations requested. Registration ahead of time will reserve space for you children, forms available at the Sunday School table and in the youth group mailbox in the volunteer work room. Walk-ins will also be accepted. Questions can be referred to Heather at 262-0847.

It's a great service that our youth offer each year.

Have a great Thanksgiving

May your family draw close and leave space open for the stranger and the Other.

One way to do that is to invite UU Service Committee "guests" to your table throughout the holidays. Guest at Your Table is an annual tradition in which congregation members take home a box featuring people that UUSC has worked with recently. These people are your ‘guests,' and you are asked to share your blessings with them each meal by putting your spare change in the box. As you give to your guests, you can learn about them by reading the Stories of Hope booklet.
Children may be able to think of ways to earn extra money to donate.

Boxes will be distributed on Sunday Nov. 21st. If you miss that you may pick a box up from the workroom table all during the holidays. I like to give to UUSC because I know that they concentrate on supporting the left out and forgotten. In the Gulf Coast following the 2005 floods, much of their work was with lgbtq families because they are locked out of so much help by laws and practice. In Haiti they are supporting child domestic workers (restaviks), women-headed households that work in the informal sector, and people living with HIV/AIDS. I also know that they bring a "standing with" rather than a charity focus.

11/21 Justice Sunday for PreK/K for both sessions is at 10:30 am at Highbanks Metro Park & Elementary Justice Sunday begins at 9:15 and 11 in Fellowship Hall, not the Worship Center.

There will be no regular classes for Wild Experiences and Web of Life on Nov. 21. You can meet at the church at 10 am or at Highbanks at 10:30. One Justice Sunday Session for both preK/K groups.

This should be a lot of fun. It will take place both in the Nature Center and on a short walk. How does habitat for animals change during the winter? What do animals need to thrive? The Naturalist will lead a hands on session. And children who want to can get their "hands on" snake skins in the Center's own Web of Life.

This is a family Justice Sunday, just as Justice Sundays for this age group were family events last year. After the session is over you can join other families to explore the park. There are a number of very interesting places at Highbanks.

The group will meet at the Ranger Station/Nature Center by 10:30am. The address is Highbanks MetroPark 9466 Columbus Pike (US Rt 23 N) Lewis Center, OH 43035. Columbus Pike is High Street in Columbus. The Nature Center is the first right, if you enter the park via the main entrance.

Parents As Religious Educators

We only have your children in Sunday School and special events about the equivalent of a school week. That means that you play a huge part in your children's religious education. And you're doing a great job. Learning about Unitarian Universalism is especially important to be done at home. We come together to live Unitarian Universalism, not learn facts about it. We have to do the practice in faith community. This month the theme for worship and thus for the elementary groups is Roots. I have a couple of suggestions for you after the jump.
We have six official Sources or roots. They are:

Unitarian Universalism (UU) draws from many sources:

Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;
Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love;
Wisdom from the world's religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life;
Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God's love by loving our neighbors as ourselves;
Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit.
Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.

I'd like to draw your attention to the first and fifth Sources that are often thought of as opposites. I believe that until we bring these two together finding the mystery and wonder in the amazing world that science shines a light on, we will lose opportunities to speak to all the parts of our children and youth.

November is a great time to do some family activities around the wonder of the universe. Some of our nights have been crystal clear - great nights to pile the kids in the car and head outside the city, perhaps to the observatory area in Delaware? I can still recall with a great deal of awe the skyscape of my childhood. The millions of diamonds glittering in the sky. There is no better way to experience the wonder and mystery of our universe than looking at the night sky.

And speaking of diamonds in the sky (no I'm not suggesting playing that Beatles' tune) this fascinating science segment from NPR's Morning Edition on Thursday: A 13 and a half billion year story. may be a great thing to listen to as a family during dinner, maybe.

There are two books that mythologize the story of the Big Bang. One is Born with a Bang. It has the most amazing illustrations. For younger children there is The Everything Seed. Both are available from amazon.com.

Connie Barlow is a UU science writer and educator, who travels around the country with her minister husband who wrote Thank God for Evolution. They speak at UU congregations as well as a host of othe denominations. Connie has focused on mythologizing the science and making it memorable for all of us, but especially for children. Explore her webpages. Check out this podcast on Connie's pages in which a scientist father talks about the way they make science sacred for their children.

Animals delight our youngest groups - make it happen

Do you love animals? Here's a great opportunity to share that with young children. Last year our Justice Sundays for preschoolers and kindergarteners were a big success as we explored habitat with visits to the zoo and The Wilds and visits from the zoo and Metro Parks naturalists.

This year we would like to repeat some of those events on one Sunday in November and two Sundays in May. We just lack a coordinator to make the arrangements. These are events for the whole family. That means that families are responsible for the transportation and for being with their children.

An Opportunity for Ministry and Belonging

Faith Development Associates do serious and joyous ministry. Are you interested in developing a deep relationship with the children or youth and their families, teachers and advisors in a segment of Sunday School or Youth Programming? We need Faith Development Associates for Junior and Senior High Sunday School; Elementary Sunday School; Young Families (Nursery and Toddler rooms and preschool and kindergarten); and Youth Programming (youth groups, youth leadership, Justice Trip, youth worship services, district liaison & cons).

This is not a short term easy volunteer spot; it s a commitment to a key component of our faith community. It involves a commitment for three years and UUA and district training. Faith Development Associates support the teachers on Sunday morning, getting to know their needs, providing suggestions, and helping build community among the teachers and age cohort. They also get to know families, keeping them informed about what's going on and supporting families when needed.

Raising Children Who Value Justice and Compassion

Michelle Richards writes a regular blog titled UU Parenting that is hosted by the UUWorld. This is her latest entry. Though I think Michelle's ideas are good I have a comment on her idea that young children are selfish.

While it is true that very young children have difficulty with the concept of points of view other than their own, they also identify strongly with the suffering of others. Just look at the expression on the face of a young child who is witnessing another child in pain. In addition neuroscientists tell us that the pleasure centers of our brains, including the brains of very young children, light up when we help others. We have all of those tendencies and attributes to work with when we set out to support compassion in our children's development.

Help put Christmas in Dorm Rooms: First Friday activity

Last month we made goodies and put together boxes for the young adults who have left high school and are off to explore the world. The reports are in. They loved them and they felt loved by the congregation that nurtured them as they grew up. Now we have another opportunity to express love and care.

Shilah has made a wonderful Christmas Tree about a foot tall that are perfect for dorm rooms. If you would like to participate in making them, please bring a string of lights and 30 foot garland to First Friday. This will be a great kids activity for First Friday.

Bring a dish at to the potluck at 6:30 and then join the fun at 7:30.

Luke Steffen in Laramie Project

Here's another opportunity to process the horrible events of attacks on gay folks and those perceived to be gay. Our own youth, Luke Steffen, is featured in Fort Hayes' production of The Laramie Project, a play about the reactions of the people of Laramie, WY to the murder of Matthew Shepard. The tickets are just $5.

You should have received an email from Deb with an mp3 and a document attached. If you haven't please check your spam folder. These are what your children need to rehearse the song they wrote and will be performing in worship on the 31st. We hope they can be a part of the 11am worship. We also hope that they can be a part of the 9:15 worship, although we recognize that there will be fewer children able to do that. There is a great breakfast before worship and you can also elect to participate in the 9:15 worship and then leave after your child performs at the beginning of the 2nd worship service. If you have not received anything, please call the office at ext 28 and let us know or tell Katie on Sunday.

During the October 31st worship service our 11 am 2nd and 3rd grade group will be performing "I Did It," a song that they wrote together to express their idea of the worship theme for the month, accountability. The talented workshop leader is Steve Fechtor. The guide for that group is Katie Cotter.

Coming soon to youtube.com and our own website will be PSAs produced by our 11am 4th and 5th grade class with the help of workshop leader Tiffany Grinstead. The guide for the group is Pat Collins. Tiffany is busy doing the final edits. A conversation with one of the creators of the PSA's tells me that the issues they took on were puppy mills and bullying. Two very important, timely and hard hitting topics. They are also a reflection of the theme, accoutability. Wow!

Rev. Mark has reminded us of this several times in his sermons recently. We can have the same belief system as Unitarian Universalists but we are a relational religion. We exist only in covenant with one another. Unitarian Universalism exists only in its lived reality. What I frequently say is a corollary of that. You can teach your children the 7 Principles at home probably better than in Sunday School. We bring our children to Sunday School to live those principles and to be Unitarian Universalist.

In that sense, Sunday School is a poor choice to name what we do in our Sunday morning gatherings. We are not trying to stuff UU factoids into children's brains. We are connecting with their hearts through their shared experiences, both experiences they have together and those they tell about. Together we use art, music, logic, the scientific process, imagination, activity and open hearts to explore the Big Questions in life and the biggest ones we explore are about community.

Together we recognize that each of us brings gifts to the group and each needs the group's support. Teachers model and encourage your children to practice respect for every individual and to welcome every individual into the interconnected web. This is the core of our curriculum in RE.

When we welcome children who are different than the majority in class, ethnicity, race or background, we are leaning into our Unitarian Universalism. When we openly empathize when children have difficulties with feeling connected to the group or feeling comfortable in the room, we are leaning into our being as Unitarian Universalists.

We have many children who are extraordinary in many ways. All are unique. Because our world is so focused on the individual - individual achievement, autonomy, individual responsibility, individual learning, we need extra focus and extra practice in being in community, being a part of a democratic whole. When you bring your children and youth to Sunday School that's what you should expect, what you should insist that we provide.

Our 1st Principle declares that each individual is worthy of dignity and our 2nd Principle testifies to the importance of compassion and our 3rd Principle to acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth. The business of our groups are these first three Principles.

Your children and youth are in Sunday School a very small percentage of their waking lives. You are their primary religious educators. You can and do do a phenomenal job of helping them explore the Big Questions (the 4th Principle). You provide regular examples of democracy in action and exercise of your right of conscience (the 5th Principle). You work for causes of peace and justice and help children understand our connection with the environment. All of these are parts of our explicit curriculum but our often implicit curriculum is more important.

What you probably struggle with is this business of living in community. Our culture is filled with the idea of the primacy of the individual. It's an integral part of our educational system, of our financial system, of our social systems. And, it is a part of our legacy as Unitarians. But we also have another legacy. The legacy of covenant and community.

At First UU we balance individualism with community. The hidden, implicit curriculum is what it means to be in community and build the Beloved Community. We have always had children and youth in Sunday School who aren't average. Some we have done well with. We have, for instance, done a generally good job of supporting lbgtqq youth. And, we revel in children and youth with high, un-average intellectual and arts attainment. We have done less well with those from families who are struggling financially, with those whose background includes a lot of struggle, with those who have learning and behavioral challenges and with children of color.

So we work toward embracing and valuing every child and youth, being in community with those with whom we disagree, being in community with those with whom we think we have nothing in common. When fights happen in our groups, our teachers may be taken away from the lesson plan for the day, but they are not taken away from the real curriculum. When behavioral disruptions happen in the group, teachers have an opportunity to model UU values and Principles.

When your child asks about another child's perceived differences or voices concerns about behavior, it provides you with a great opportunity to be a religious educator.

I understand that children sometimes become afraid when they see what looks like out of control behavior and parents can become concerned based on this information. Please know that our protocol includes getting children who are having difficulty out of the environment as quickly as possible. Often it is the environment that is contributing to the problems. In my more than two years here I've never known of an instance when children were in real danger from the behavior of other children. In my ten years as a DRE only one child has ever been seriously hurt. It was a 10 year old whose leg required stitches because he fell while playing in the woods in back of the church at another congregation.

If you ever have any question about what has happened during Sunday School, please call me. I investigate all concerns. I want a space that is both physically and psychologically safe for everyone. Living our values as a faith community is often not easy but it is the reason we come together in Sunday School.

Don't forget about the Pumpkin Carving and Potluck at a local farm on Oct. 23rd. And the worship service for all honoring El Dia de los Muertos.

Now add a Friday night event (Oct 22 at 7 pm), a screening of Fish Out of Water. an animated documentary that explores the seven Bible verses that are used to condemn homosexuality and support discrimination. It is 60 minutes in length and appropriate for all ages. If your children are struggling with responding to friends and playmates, they may be interested and the animation may hold their attention. It is co-sponsored by First UU's Gay/Straight Alliance and Equality Ohio.

Helping with clean up at 11am

Our facilities staff have had to make many changes recently. They can use the help of all of us to get the rooms ready for SYC. Please remind your child when you come to pick him up to help with stacking chairs. The 4th and 5th grade room can also use help moving heavy cases to get the room SYC ready.

For all parents, teachers often welcome help cleaning up so that they can get into Fellowship Hall for a few minutes of connecting with friends.

El Dia de los Muertos is a great opportunity to talk about family members and other loved ones who have died

It seems hard to find opportunities to share memories about your grandparents, uncles and aunts and other loved ones that your children either didn't meet before they died or of whom they have few memories of their own. Remembering our loved ones is a way that they live on. Celebrating El Dia de los Muertos can provide that opportunity. We will celebrate the holiday together during a Whole Congregation Worship on Oct. 31st. There will be altars or ofrendas set up for all of us to honor our ancestors.

Your family can also build one of your own. A table will work fine. Traditionally it has three levels, so some boxes on the table can create the 2nd level. You could also run a cord across the top and attach papel picado. Papel picado is made by folding colored paper and cutting out designs in it and then unfolding it. The altar contains things to entice the spirits of the loved ones to return. So it contains a photo or drawing and some of the things that they loved the best, including food and drink. Lots of stories get told as you remember all the things that your loved ones cared for.

Of course el Dia de los Muertos is a time of fun and laughs too. Just google dia de los muertos for great ideas. And join us on Oct. 31st for some laughter and tears.

Pumpkin Carving/Farm Visit Family Fun

High School Con Update: Con registration is closed

At both sessions the Wild Experiences and Web of Life are busy looking at what's going on outdoors around First UU as we go through a time of rapid and observable change in nature. They are busy falling more deeply in love with nature and discovering that all life is both a circle and a web. Taking walks and talking about what you see and talking about the differences between wild animals and pets can extend the lessons.

The elementary groups - Workshop Experiences - will be exploring the same theme the adults do in worship, accountability or responsibility. We have two special projects going at 11 am. The second and third grade, with some first graders, will be writing their own song on the theme to perform during worship on the 31st. The 4th and 5th graders will be making a video to post on youtube and show to the congregation.
At 9:15 in workshops there will be songs and stories and a special project on accountability and the BP disaster. What would you have done if you were at BP, if you had a role to play, decisions to make? What do you do when you make a mistake. Kids will get an opportunity to decide. The Big Question they are all exploring is: What does it mean to live in community. The UU Principle is the 7th: we are all a part of an interconnected whole.

Sunday School for October - All Congregation Worship

There are five Sundays in October. On the 5th Sunday, we will have an All-Congregation Worship Service, as we celebrate El Dia de lost Muertos. Expect it to be both interactive and solemn; fun and tearful. It will be more meaningful for your children if you talk with them about people in your family that you remember, as well as memories you heard from older members of your family. Talking To Your Child About Bullying

The horrific number of suicides in the past few weeks that we know are attributable to bullying, most of it based on perceived sexual orientation, is offering you the opportunity to talk with your youth or children about bullying. While no school should tolerate bullying and Congress is working on a law that would outlaw bullying, most children have witnessed it. Many of our children have been the target.

It is never easy to figure out what to do in a bullying situation. Talking ahead of time with your child about what to do can make a huge difference in their feelings about themselves as competent and efficacious people who live out their UU Principles and can turn the climate around and make a difference.

Senior High Con Registration Is Now!

Registration for the Halloween Con, the district conference for senior high kids opened Friday, according to an email the RE office received. Registration is limited to just 60, so make sure your youth get on line and get registered. The Con is Oct.22 to 24 at the Wooster congregation. Registration closes by Oct. 15, unless it maxes out earlier.
The forms appear to be here. The words indicate that registration is not open but try the form.
Our new CONcierges are Helene Roussi and Michelle McNabb.

First Grade and 8th Grade OWL Classes Closed...

We had 14 1st Graders plus their parents attend orientation on Sunday. We cannot accept any more children and offer quality values based sexuality education. There will be a 9 am 1st grade OWL group beginning in January. In the meantime your child can attend Workshop Exploration at 11am.

8th Grade OWL normally closes on the second Sunday of the Sunday School year. We have had to close it early because we already have 16 youth signed up.
High School OWL will remain open to youth in the 10th grade and up who are willing to commit to regular attendance and have the written approval of their parents.

Larger Than Expected Enrollment Forces Room Changes

So now that you've found your children's rooms, three 11 am groups are moving to accommodate the very large High School OWL class.

High School OWL moves from the library to room 9. 4th and 5th grade moves from room 9 to room 10 and Web of Life (kindergarten) moves from room 10 to the library. New directional signs will be up on Sunday. We're so excited that all of our middle and high school classes are full to overflowing but it presents good challenges.

The universe is full of mystery. It was born in mystery and the more we know, the more we realize we don't know. That is true in both science and in our own personal quests.
The quest for knowledge and understanding is nevertheless important. It is important to seek to understand more - about ourselves, others, and the world.
The quest is lifelong. We never come to a place where we have it all figured out. When we do, we are deluding ourselves.
What we do in this world matters eternally. What we do sends out ripples that start other ripples. We will never know the extent of our influence.
While the arc of the universe is very long, it does bend toward justice and we influence it. The work of justice is the work of generations. We do what we can here and now, and pass on the passion for justice to others.
Humans get pleasure out of helping others and connecting with them. The more we do that, the richer our lives will be.
Love is stronger than death. Love binds us to the generations that came before us and to the generations to come. Love is powerful.
The world is beautiful and meant to be appreciated and enjoyed.
Life is sometimes hard, and it is much harder alone.
We are surrounded with communities that will help if we will ask.
Mistakes are basic to learning and growing.
All life is an interconnected whole.

Room assignments are pretty much the same this year as last. There will be a big map up at the Sunday School Information Table and smaller ones you can pick up, as well as directional signs.
1st graders and their families who are taking 1st grade OWL at 11 am should go directly to Room 5 to start their Orientation.
If you miss orientation, 1st graders may take OWL at 9:15 starting in January.
1st graders at 11 am who do not take OWL should join the 2nd & 3rd grade Workshop Exploration Group in rooms 3 & 4.
All classes grades 6 and up will begin at 11 am in the rooms. Next week those groups will join the lower grades in the Worship Center at the beginning of the 11 am service.
There will be an orientation/information session at 11:15 in the A/B Area for all those in grades 6 through 12 who would like to do an alternative to regularly Sunday School classes that involves volunteering and mentoring.
High School OWL will require a signed permission slip from parents/guardians. That will go home with the group on Sunday. Watch for an email about the class. If your youth has not registered by 4 pm on Friday, please call me at the church on Saturday afternoon so that I can get you on that email list.

Our Whole Lives (OWL) Parent/Guardian Orientations for 1st Graders and 8th Graders

OWL is a values-based, comprehensive sexuality education curriculum that we offer for all ages and stages. OWL helps children, youth and adults live out their values in their personal lives and understand how their values relate to their sexuality.

The groups for those under age 18 require the informed consent of parents or guardians. The orientation for those in grade 8 is TODAY at 2 pm. It is for parents and guardians only to allow for freedom in sharing information. Eight Grade OWL meets the whole year at 11 am

The first graders who normally attend at 11 am will begin orientation for both parents/guardians and 1st graders at 11 on Sept. 19th. Orientation will continue for part of Sept. 26th. First Grade OWL ends Nov. 21st. Those in 9:15 Sunday School will have a 9:15 OWL group starting in January.

Junior High Con Registration is NOW

The Asian Festival is Memorial weekend in Franklin Park, also a great family event.

Learn about how dragonboat races have spread around the world. The Steel City Dragon Boat Club of Pittsburgh will be bringing two boats for an exhibition race and workshop. In addition there will be Dragon and Lion dancing, Tai-chi workshop, and exhibits of Asian kites and lanterns.

What do we need to know about our bodies, families, feelings, keeping safe? 10 weeks, including Parent/Child Orientation. Parents meet informally during this time. Often offered once at 9:15 and once at 11, depending on the number of children.
5th/6th Grade - OWL - Values-based sexuality education. Focuses in puberty and relationships. 10 weeks, including Parent/Child Orientation. Offered during first service starting in January.
Elementary - Justice Sundays - Offered several times a year during regular Sunday School. Standing on the Side of Love theme as we work together to make a difference in the world. May continue this year's theme of immigration.
Youth Justice Sundays - Offered several times a year during regular Sunday School. Standing on the Side of Love theme as we work together to make a difference in the world. May continue this year's theme of immigration.
Middle and High School - Youth Groups. The extremely popular middle school youth group is expanding to include high school youth. Currently offered at 12:45 twice a month.

2010 First Unitarian Universalist Church Peace Camp

Everyday—and in so many ways—we are reminded that we live in a world of conflict. Help your child(ren) explore the ideas of poverty, discrimination, and fighting by sending them to First UU’s Peace Camp.
In the span of a week, children will experience many peaceful practices, including building a global community, meditating, walking labyrinths, singing, dancing, and more. In these ways, PeaceKids will continue their journey on the path to peaceful living.

Peace Camp 2010 will be held in two sessions, each from 9:00 am–12:00 pm M-F:

SESSION ONE (8/2-6) SESSION TWO (8/9-13)

Children who have completed kindergarten-6th grade are invited for both sessions

Youth and Elementary form two groups to address the situation in Arizona on May 23rd

Last night the UUA board met to decide what to do about our GA for 2012. It is scheduled in Arizona. They decided not to decide and are going to ask the delegates to make the decision at this year's GA with the recommendation that we hold GA outside of Arizona, as well as donate money to the fight for dignity for everyone in Arizona. In Ohio one legislator and a sheriff have already called on our governor to initiate a law similar to the Arizona law that requires law enforcement to demand papers of anyone who they suspect is not here legally.

Immediately after the law was passed, according to a Standing On the Side of Love report, more than 600 federal officers were rounding up people in one area. I read a story of a woman whose parents became citizens, eventually. She became impatient waiting for them to feel stable enough to send for her, so at 18 she cross the border illegally. She was caught but not deported. She married a US citizen and they had children. She applied for citizenship, as the spouse and daughter of US citizens. She got to the very last interview, after a lengthy process. At that interview they told her she could not become a citizen because of the illegal entry many years ago. A few days later ICE kicked in her door as she was nursing their youngest, still a baby. She was deported, away from her parents who are citizens, her siblings who are citizens, her husband who is a citizen and their children who are citizens.

Is this a fair punishment for her crime? What should our response be as Unitarian Universalist?

On the 23rd, our final Justice Sunday of the year, we'll consider what we should do and Stand on the Side of Love.

NEWEST INFORMATION - Summer Sundays begin May 30th, as the annual Sunday School calendar stated. I was informed that my dates were incorrect because we have a longstanding practice of beginning the Summer sessions the Sunday AFTER Memorial Day. I made the correction and two days later was informed that the Worship Committee decided that starting the summer schedule on Memorial weekend made much more sense. I am sorry for the confusion.

On June 6th we go to one service at 10 am. That is the time we begin Summer Sundays.

PreK/K has fun with Dr. Seuss again this year. Please sign up on the colorful board at the Sunday School Table and add the story you will do in the slot for your name, so the same story isn't used twice. The
board will stay up so you can consult it through the summer. You and your partner are responsible for getting the book and planning your activities. Please be sure to plan plenty of outdoor time. Dr. Seuss books work very well with our 7 Principles. There will be a 7 Principle chart to hang on the sticky board in Rooms 3 & 4. See if you can figure out how your story relates. Seuss characters are so wacky; dare to come in costume. You'll all love it.

Cindy Dillard returns with the elementary group with a great new curriculum, based on that environmental classic, Keepers of the Earth: Native American Stories and Environmental Activities for Children. The book was authored by a Native American storyteller and a European American environmental writer. A UU DRE has adapted some of the sessions for use in UU summer programs. There will be a lot of trips outdoors during these Sunday mornings. That means we will need at least two volunteers to make sure everyone stays safe. Please sign up on the equally exciting board at the Sunday School Table. Helpers will not have to prep for Sundays, just show up to have fun.

Parties this week and next in Elementary Groups and Neighboring Faiths

The regular Sunday School year is coming to a close. May 16th is the last day of regular classes. We will have Justice Sunday activities on May 23rd in which we will Stand on the Side of Love for immigration rights in the elementary through high school groups, while the preschool and kindergarteners learn more about habitat at The Wilds.

Most groups will have their parties on the 16th and you may be asked to contribute food or decorations or help out in the room.

Pre-school and Kindergarten Trip to the Wilds May 23rd

Once again our administrator has arranged a great trip for our youngest to learn more about habitat. The Wilds is home to rare and endangered species from around the world living in natural, open-range habitat. Animals include Sichuan Takin, camels, giraffe, cheetas, rhinos and many, many more.

This is a trip for the family. Siblings are welcome. We will leave at 9:30 from the church on May 23rd for 14000 International Road, Cumberland. It will take just under 2 hours. Please arrive a few minutes early to arrange carpooling.

The regular prices ($20 for adults, 15 for 4 to 12 year olds and free for those under 4) are discounted 50% for those with a Columbus Zoo membership. The discount also applies to guests, if you have a membership with guests. You will find a sign up sheet for your guest passes in your child's classroom this week and next. If you have available guest passes, please sign the sheet and indicate how many guests. If don't have a membership, please sign next to one of the offers. This will help us organize on the 23rd.

If the cost of the trip will prevent your family from participating please talk to Jolinda Stephens about a scholarship. This is an official Sunday School activity and we won't exclude anyone who wants to participate.
